Although it looks totally different from years past, it’s “Back to School“ time once again. Students from kindergarten to grad school are embarking on new ways of learning, and these new ways are being met with excitement by some and resistance by others.
That’s usually the way it is with learning, isn’t it? There are those who view it as an adventure – exploring new information, facing new challenges, and expanding horizons. For them, acquiring knowledge is new, exciting, fun! And then there are others who push against learning – regarding it with dread, fear, trepidation, and blatant resistance. Some folks may feel they already know everything they need to know. Or maybe they’re just lazy. After all, learning requires effort. Some consider it too hard, too uncomfortable, too much trouble.
Where are you on the learning eagerness scale?
Some of you have used the past months as opportunities to learn, stretch, and grow. Perhaps you’ve read more than you have since your days of formal education. Maybe you’ve learned a new skill or experimented with new recipes or tested yourself with a DIY project. It could be that you’ve transformed your business. Possibly you’ve learned something about yourself through some self-reflection or by taking on a physical challenge. If so, good for you!
But some of you have wasted this time wallowing in your disdain over current circumstances and doing nothing to improve your brain, your body, or your situation. If that’s the case, it’s time to get up, shake off the dust and the rust, and develop an eagerness to learn.
Why? Because if you don’t, you’ll soon be bored…and boring. I guarantee.
Whether you grab a Big Chief tablet and a #2 pencil to sketch out a new org chart for your company or login to YouTube to learn how to make your own catsup, grow petunias, or play backgammon, open up your brain to the idea that it’s time to go “back to school”. Learn something new today. You’ll be glad you did.
