I’ve recently encountered a number of people who suffer from glossophobia. People of all ages, education levels, and positions are susceptible. For some, it starts at an early age; for others it’s the result of what, for them, was a traumatic event, and for still others, it can strike unexpectedly.
You may be saying, “Yikes! What is glossophobia?” “Is it contagious?” “How do I know if I have it?” And, most importantly, “Is there a cure?”
Believe me, you know if you have it. And fortunately, there is a cure. Glossophobia is the fear of public speaking. It comes from the Greek term glossa, meaning tongue, and phobos, fear or dread.
According to some studies, speaking in front of a group ranks as American’s #1 fear, followed by death at #2. Of course, fear of heights, flying, and spiders also make the list.
If you suffer from this condition, you may find comfort in the fact that you’re in good company. Some of the most intelligent, competent and talented people, such as leaders in government, business, and entertainment, are afflicted. How about this list – Warren Buffett, Renee Zellweger, Thomas Jefferson, Nicole Kidman, Mahatma Ghandi, Abraham Lincoln – all glossophobic!
Even Moses, when he was called by God to lead the Israelites out of Egypt, tried to avoid the assignment. “But Moses pleaded with the Lord, ‘O Lord, I’m not very good with words. I never have been, and I’m not now, even though you have spoken to me. I get tongue-tied, and my words get tangled.’” (Exodus 4:10 – NLV) Can anyone relate to Moses?
The good news is that these notables were able to overcome their condition, and so can you. The best way to conquer glossophobia is to work with a coach, someone who can help you untie your tongue and untangle your words so that you can speak with clarity and confidence – on and off the platform. It’s one of the most important life skills you can learn.
OK – I admit it. This is a “not-so-subtle” commercial. If you’d like to overcome the anxiety that often accompanies speaking or elevate your skills by learning how to craft a clear, concise message, let’s talk. I may have just the remedy you need.
